ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS CHANGE IN THE FINNISH MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS CHANGE IN THE FINNISH MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT HELSINKI ON 4th OF SEPTEMBER 2016
Tournament director Sami Mäki informed Mauri Saastamoinen, Chairman of the Finnish Bridge Federation Competition Committee by e-mail on Monday, 5th of September that there was an error in the final results and that it was his fault.
Competition committee investigated an issue and found out that:
1) On the fourth round, in the team match, team PETE versus team Hashtag, in board number 27, there was at one table result 3NT by South 9 tricks made, and at the other table there was result 3NT -1 by West. However, the board itself and lead suggested that the contract was actually played by South also at the other table.
2) Tournament director Sami Mäki noticed during the next round that there was a suspicious result. He asked whether the result was correct from only the team, which gained from correcting the result but not from the team, which suffered from correcting the result.
3) Tournament director corrected the result for the butler results. However, the scoring program in use, Magic, did not update the team results automatically the uncorrected results stood.
Competition committee noted, that
a) there was an error made by tournament director, and that error did affect the final results of the tournament, and
b) Competition committee was informed in time according to the Competition rules and regulations of Bridge League of Finland.
Competition committee discussed the issue and noted, that in this case, the Competition regulations required the correction of the final results after the normal 30 minutes appeal period. In this case it was the matter of changing the result between 3rd and 4th placed teams in a match played between them. Changing two imps by correcting the result in board number 27 (originally match won by 14–12 by team PETE against team Hashtag) would change the result to 16–12 for team PETE. That would mean in team results change from result 10,86–9,14 to 11,67–8,33 and in the final results change for team PETE from 71,35 to 72,16 and for team Hashtag from 72,79 to 71,98.
Competition committee discussed the issue more and noted that it is right that a team, which earned 3rd place by playing is entitled to a bronze medal in that competition. So, team PETE is entitled for bronze medal in Finnish mixed team championships.
On the other hand, Competition committee noted, that although the above mentioned change in final result was indeed made according Competition regulations of Bridge League of Finland, Competition committee came to a conclusion that it would be unreasonable for team Hashtag to change final results; nobody contacted the team during a play and they could not be aware about possibility that final results might change.
Competition committee notes that it is reasonable to let also team Hashtag to keep their third place and bronze medal.

DECISION CONCERNING THE RESULTS CHANGE IN THE FINNISH MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT HELSINKI 4TH OF SEPTEMBER
Competition committee of Bridge League of Finland has made a decision to change the final results of the Finnish Mixed Teams Championships:
Teams PETE and Hashtag will both get bronze medal.
Both teams will receive master points as they were the sole team placed in the 3rd position.
This result change does not affect the monetary prices.
